Aprilia's New 850cc MotoGP Engine: A Work in Progress
Aprilia is making significant strides in its MotoGP engine development, with CEO Massimo Rivola confirming that the new 850cc engine is 'ready, running' on the test bench. This comes as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 technical regulations, which will see a reduction in engine capacity, a change in tire supplier, and restrictions on aerodynamics and ride-height devices.
While KTM has released footage of its 850cc engine in both factory and track settings, Aprilia's 850cc debut remains a mystery. Rivola, however, is confident in the engine's performance, stating, 'The [850cc] engine is ready... The engine is running.'
Aprilia's focus on the 850cc engine is a strategic decision, as it aims to challenge for a title in 2026. This shift in resources from the current 1000cc bike to the 850cc prototype is a complex one, as Rivola explains, 'We need to think, 'OK, what is the strategy? We push the '26 bike [development] until which point?' It's a delicate balance, as the team's success in 2025 will influence their approach to the 850cc project.
Technical Director Fabiano Sterlacchini suggests that Aprilia's main development crossover could take place around March or April of 2026. This timing is crucial, as it will determine the team's ability to adapt to the new regulations and compete effectively.
Aprilia's recent success in the MotoGP championship, with Marco Bezzecchi finishing third and the RS-GP winning three of the final four grands prix, has only heightened expectations. The team's sights are now set on a title challenge in 2026, making the decision on resource allocation even more critical.
The 2027 regulations will bring significant changes, including a reduction in engine capacity, Pirelli replacing Michelin as the sole tire supplier, restrictions on aerodynamics, and the banning of ride-height devices. Aprilia's openly critical stance on these devices, as exemplified by the ride-height failure that led to Fabio Quartararo's retirement, highlights the team's determination to innovate and adapt.
As Aprilia navigates this complex landscape, the industry eagerly awaits the team's next moves, especially the unveiling of the 850cc bike, which promises to be a game-changer in MotoGP.
