Love is in the air, and history is made! Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese just made headlines by marrying Jodie Haydon in a private ceremony, marking the first time in 124 years that a sitting Australian leader has tied the knot. What a momentous occasion!
The wedding took place at The Lodge in Canberra, the Prime Minister's official residence, just after the Australian Parliament adjourned for the year. Imagine the excitement! Around 60 of their closest family and friends, including cabinet ministers, gathered to witness the special event. The ceremony was filled with personal touches, including personal vows, a ring bearer (their adorable dog Toto!), and a flower girl (Haydon’s five-year-old niece).
"We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends,” the couple shared in a joint statement.
But here's where it gets interesting: Albanese and Haydon's love story began at a business event in Melbourne back in 2020. Their relationship blossomed during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Haydon has since become a regular presence at official engagements, both public and overseas. She's a finance professional who previously worked in the superannuation sector and has also taken on the role of chief patron of the National Portrait Gallery.
This wedding is a significant moment, but it also comes with added security. Recent arrests involving threats to the Prime Minister's safety have led to increased security measures. Albanese himself has acknowledged that the federal police have expanded their security arrangements.
Albanese was previously married to Carmel Tebbutt for nearly two decades, and they share a son, Nathan.
