The Bullfrog Road overpass in Cle Elum has reopened ahead of the anticipated schedule, much to the relief of local commuters and travelers.
In a significant incident back in October, this overpass suffered extensive damage when a large truck, carrying an oversized load, collided with it. The impact was severe enough that a complete section of girders needed replacement. But in a remarkable turnaround, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) managed to complete the repairs ahead of time, allowing the overpass to welcome traffic once again.
To showcase the scale and complexity of the repair work, WSDOT has released a fascinating time-lapse video that condenses an impressive 86 days of labor into just 23 seconds. This visual representation captures the substantial effort involved in dismantling half of the old structure and installing new precast concrete beams, which significantly accelerated the repair process and minimized disruptions on Interstate 90.
Looking ahead, WSDOT has announced plans to return in the spring for further enhancements, specifically to apply a thin overlay on the new bridge deck, weather permitting. It’s important to note that while this additional work requires the temporary closure of the Bullfrog Road overpass, it will not necessitate any closures of I-90, ensuring continued traffic flow on this vital route.
The total cost for these emergency repairs is estimated at around $8 million. This project underscores both the challenges posed by roadway infrastructure and the dedication of transportation officials to maintain safety and accessibility for the traveling public.
