Commander Banned and Restricted Announcement – February 9, 2026 (2026)

Big Changes in Commander: Unbanning Cards and Stirring the Pot

Today marks a significant shift in the Commander format, as we unveil some bold decisions that are sure to spark debate. But here's where it gets controversial: we're unbanning not one, but two cards, and introducing a brand-new designation that could change the way we approach deck-building. And this is the part most people miss: we're also opening the floor for discussion on three other banned cards, inviting you to join the conversation and help shape the future of Commander.

Announcement Date: February 9, 2026

The Commander Format Panel, in collaboration with the Commander Design group at Wizards, has been hard at work reevaluating the banned list. After months of deliberation, in-person discussions at last year's Commander Summit, and careful consideration of player feedback, we're excited to share our latest updates. For a comprehensive overview of the format's direction, hybrid mana, Game Changers, and more, don't miss our companion article (https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/commander-brackets-beta-update-february-9-2026).

Unbanning Cards: A Delicate Balance

Unbanned: Biorhythm – This card has long been a topic of debate, with its potential to end games abruptly and disproportionately impact players. However, after successfully unbanning other game-warping spells like Worldfire, Sway of the Stars, and Coalition Victory, we believe Biorhythm deserves a chance. While it's powerful and can lead to unsatisfying conclusions, its high mana cost and vulnerability to counterplay make it a situational choice rather than an auto-include. We acknowledge the risks, but also see the potential for exciting, memorable moments that can turn games upside down.

Unbanned: Lutri, the Spellchaser (but with a twist) – Lutri's banning was always peculiar, driven by its overwhelming strength as a companion. To address this, we're introducing a new designation: banned as a companion. Lutri can now be included in decks or serve as a commander, but cannot be used as a companion. This decision is unique to Lutri, as we don't plan to expand the companion mechanic significantly. It's a solution tailored to a card players have been eagerly awaiting, and we're confident it strikes the right balance.

Cards on the Cusp: Your Feedback Matters

We also discussed three other cards that didn't make the unban cut this time but are worth revisiting. Here's where we need your input:

  1. Sundering Titan – Once a notorious land-denial tool, this card has become less oppressive as Commander has evolved. With the bracket system in place, it could even be seen as a heroic counter to ramp-heavy strategies. However, its potential to frustrate players remains a concern. Should it be unbanned?

  2. Iona, Shield of Emeria – This splashy Angel can shut down entire decks, particularly monocolor strategies. While it can lead to fun political interactions, its ability to lock players out of the game is a significant drawback. Is the upside worth the risk?

  3. Griselbrand – A powerhouse reanimation target, Griselbrand can draw a substantial portion of a deck and win games on the spot. It's a high-risk, high-reward card that players love, but its potential to dominate games is undeniable. Could it find a place in higher-powered brackets?

The Future of Commander: Your Voice Counts

We're not stopping here. Unlike last year, we're open to making additional changes throughout 2026 based on your feedback. Cards like Jeweled Lotus remain banned for now, but nothing is set in stone. We're also keeping a close eye on Thassa's Oracle and Rhystic Study, though neither is close to a ban at this time.
