Dubai's transportation network is undergoing a transformative upgrade with the introduction of a revolutionary trackless tram system and expanded dedicated lanes for buses and taxis. This ambitious initiative aims to revolutionize urban mobility, making commuting faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly.
The trackless tram, a cutting-edge innovation, operates without traditional tracks, utilizing optical navigation, GPS, and LiDAR technologies to follow precise virtual routes guided by cameras detecting road markings. This system offers a cost-effective and rapid implementation solution compared to conventional trams, with plans to cover eight key locations across the city.
Additionally, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is extending dedicated bus and taxi lanes, adding six new corridors totaling 13 kilometers to the existing network. This expansion is expected to significantly reduce travel times for buses, improve punctuality, and increase ridership, providing commuters with a reliable and efficient alternative to private vehicles.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of RTA, emphasized the vision behind these projects, stating, 'These projects are part of our commitment to position public transport as the preferred choice for mobility in Dubai. By enhancing service quality, expanding coverage, and integrating various transport modes, we are creating a flexible, sustainable, and efficient system that supports the city's growth and enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors.'
The trackless tram, with its autonomous navigation and real-time obstacle detection, offers a sustainable and cost-efficient alternative to traditional rail systems. Each tram will feature three carriages, accommodating up to 300 passengers, and will reach a top speed of 70 km/h with an operational speed range of 25 to 60 km/h. A single charge will enable the tram to cover a distance of up to 100 km, further emphasizing its efficiency and sustainability.
Dubai's commitment to smart and sustainable public transport is evident through the Trackless Tram, which complements the existing advanced public transport system, including the Dubai Metro and the Dubai Tram. This innovative approach positions Dubai as a global leader in the field, offering a seamless and high-capacity transport ecosystem that is ready for the future.
