Farmers' Day has passed, but the mission continues: let's champion 'Eat Ghana' to secure our future! This month, we celebrated Farmers' Day, a time to honor our agricultural heroes. The theme, "Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future," highlighted the critical importance of local food production, consumption, and self-sufficiency for a robust economy. But here's where it gets controversial... or rather, crucial: the 'Eat Ghana Rice Campaign' is more vital than ever. It's a call to action, a reminder that every grain of rice we choose can shape our nation's destiny.
Rice, once a luxury, is now a daily staple in Ghanaian households. Over the past decade, domestic paddy rice production has soared, growing from 302,000 metric tonnes in 2010 to nearly 987,000 metric tonnes in 2023. This remarkable progress is a testament to the dedication of our farmers and the impact of government initiatives in areas like seeds, mechanization, irrigation, and financial support. And this is the part most people miss: Despite this impressive growth, Ghana still spends over GHS 3 billion annually on rice imports. Imagine the possibilities if that money stayed within our borders!
That's the heart of the 'Eat Ghana Rice Campaign.' It's about reducing import dependency, promoting local processing, and ensuring food security. It aligns perfectly with the Feed Ghana Programme, the 24-Hour Economy Policy, and our commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement. But here's where it gets personal: This campaign isn't just about economics; it's about shaping behavior, correcting misconceptions, and fostering national pride.
The truth is, Ghana Rice brands have made tremendous strides. Most are clean, beautifully processed, and meet the standards of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA). They cook perfectly for your favorite dishes. It's time to retire the outdated myth of inferior quality. Brands like Mama Gold, Striker Gold, Efie Ne Fie, and others offer quality that rivals, and sometimes surpasses, imported rice.
A Special Appeal: As we approach the festive season, I urge corporate entities and leaders to consider Ghana Rice for your staff gifts. Show leadership by choosing Ghana Rice for your families, friends, and workers, especially during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Ghana Rice meets the highest expectations of today's consumer. Across the country, millers and processors deliver rice that is clean, nutritious, and processed to international standards. Choosing Ghana Rice is an investment in our nation. Every bag purchased supports the local economy, supports Ghanaian farmers and their families, and keeps income circulating right here at home. Eating Ghana Rice is an act of national pride. It reflects our belief in the strength of our people, our farms, and our ability to produce food that competes with the best in the world. Beyond pride, consumers also enjoy real value. Ghana Rice offers the taste, aroma, and quality every household desires, ensuring great meals at a good price. And because our Ghana Rice brands are fresh and produced close to home, they retain their natural nutrients, contributing meaningfully to healthy and balanced diets. Choosing Ghana Rice means choosing quality, supporting livelihoods, celebrating our identity, and nourishing our families, all with one simple purchase.
To the Ghanaian public, I say: Let us all choose Ghana Rice. Every bag you buy supports a farmer. Every meal you cook strengthens our economy. And every choice you make brings us closer to a Ghana that is self-reliant, prosperous, and proud.
Call to Action: We appreciate the government's efforts to support local farmers, but more can be done. It's encouraging that President John Mahama has instructed key ministries and agencies to prioritize Ghana-grown food products for public institutions. Let's ensure these directives are followed and that the security agencies clamp down on illegal rice imports. With unity, determination, and national commitment, we can transform our rice sector into a cornerstone of Ghana's agricultural future.
Finally, a huge thank you to AGRA, The John A. Kufuor Foundation, FarmWallet, and all the partners of the Eat Ghana Rice campaign. Let's continue to make Ghana Rice the preferred choice. Ghana Rice – Our Grain, Our Pride.
