Limited Edition Firefly EV Launches! Nio's Affordable Brand Goes Artistic (2026)

Limited-edition EVs: A Bold Move by Firefly!

Firefly, the compact electric vehicle (EV) brand under Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866), is making waves again! They've just launched a new, limited-edition Firefly EV in China, and it's turning heads. But what's the buzz all about?

This isn't Firefly's first rodeo with limited editions, and it's a strategy that seems to be paying off. This time, they've teamed up with Dutch artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk to create a unique vehicle. Only 99 of these special EVs are available, making them highly exclusive.

The collaboration between Firefly and Jordy van den Nieuwendijk has resulted in a unique design, with the artist's signature proudly displayed on the car's body. The theme revolves around a flying horse motif, which is particularly fitting as 2026 is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac. To complement the car, the Nio Life online store has also introduced a range of winged horse-themed products designed by van den Nieuwendijk.

Now, let's talk numbers. The limited-edition Firefly EV starts at RMB 95,800 (approximately $13,750) under the BaaS (Battery as a Service) plan. This means you'll also pay a monthly battery rental fee of RMB 399. This is a premium of RMB 16,000, or about 20.05%, compared to the regular Firefly EV's BaaS starting price of RMB 79,800.

But here's where it gets controversial... Firefly hasn't disclosed the price of the limited-edition model including the battery pack, which suggests it might only be available through the BaaS plan. For context, the two standard versions of the Firefly EV are priced at RMB 119,800 and RMB 125,800 respectively, including the battery pack.

This strategy of releasing limited editions seems to be working for Firefly, as it helps boost brand awareness without significant costs. They've already launched several limited editions, including the Nomadic Maillard and Night Creature editions, in the past year.

Firefly launched the Firefly EV on April 19, with deliveries in China starting on April 29. The model has already expanded its reach, with deliveries in Europe and the debut of a right-hand-drive version in Singapore earlier this month. Firefly has delivered 586 units so far this month.

What do you think about this limited-edition strategy? Is it a clever way to generate buzz, or does it feel like a marketing gimmick? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
