Steph Curry remains clearly capable of carrying the Warriors, while Jonathan Kuminga has fallen from the rotation, and Golden State’s roster is flooded with guards fighting for minutes.
That mix was true when Golden State defeated the Rockets in a seven-game playoff series in May, triggering the memory of a dangerous, capable version of the team. But this season, Steve Kerr’s squad is approaching things with a different mindset.
With the record sitting at 13-14, the Warriors are under .500 as their role players have struggled to cover for Curry, Butler, and Green when they’ve missed time. Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Moses Moody all claimed they were ready for big responsibilities during training camp, yet the team’s depth hasn’t met many tests this year.
Kuminga will become trade-eligible on January 15, and with the NBA trade deadline approaching on February 4, The Standard’s Danny Emerman joined Section 415 to talk about the urgency facing Golden State’s front office. The conversation examined how to assemble a supporting cast that can help Curry push for a deep postseason run.
