In a bold move that’s sure to spark global debate, Russia has officially staked its claim on oil assets it’s developing in Venezuela, directly challenging U.S. interests in the region. This comes on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that American and Western oil giants would lead the revival of Venezuela’s struggling oil industry. But here’s where it gets controversial: Russia’s state-owned firm, Roszarubezhneft, has declared unequivocally that all its Venezuelan assets are now under Russian ownership, acquired through market-based transactions and in full compliance with international law.
Roszarubezhneft, established in 2020 as a subsidiary of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, stepped in after the U.S. imposed sanctions on Rosneft for its involvement in Venezuela’s oil trade. The company stated, ‘All assets of Roszarubezhneft in Venezuela are owned by the Russian state, having been purchased under market conditions and in accordance with Venezuelan and international law, as well as bilateral agreements between Russia and Venezuela.’ This move underscores Russia’s strategic push to solidify its foothold in Venezuela’s energy sector, despite escalating tensions with the U.S.
And this is the part most people miss: Roszarubezhneft isn’t just sitting on these assets—it’s actively expanding. The company operates five joint ventures with Venezuela’s state oil firm, PDVSA, and plans to further develop its infrastructure and production capabilities. ‘We will continue to honor our commitments, working closely with international partners to ensure sustainable development and address emerging challenges,’ the firm emphasized.
But the stakes are higher than ever. Earlier this year, the U.S. made headlines by arresting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on drug-trafficking charges and seizing a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic after a high-stakes pursuit near Venezuelan waters. While Russian President Vladimir Putin has remained publicly silent on Maduro’s arrest, the Russian Foreign Ministry swiftly condemned the U.S. actions, demanding Maduro’s immediate release.
