"It hit me this morning; my jersey is being retired!" Saniya shared with the Wilmington Star-News. "It's a huge deal, and I think I downplayed it a bit. But seeing my family here, the photos, and the excitement, it's all so real."
Saniya's first season with the Sun was nothing short of impressive. She averaged 8.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, with nearly a block per game to boot. Her impact was felt as the Sun won just 11 games that season, and she finished with an impressive 100 stocks (62 steals and 38 blocks), joining an elite group of seven players who achieved this feat in the WNBA that year.
In a standout game against the Indiana Fever, Saniya set a personal record with five blocks, becoming only the third Sun player in history to reach this milestone. Her season's stats put her in the company of some of the WNBA's greatest players, with 371 points, 118 rebounds, 113 assists, and 62 steals. She achieved a rare feat, becoming the first rookie in 23 years to post such impressive numbers, with the last rookie to do so being Tamika Catchings in 2002.

Despite this tragedy, Saniya returned to Wilmington during the offseason to host the inaugural Dee Dee Toon Rivers UNCW luncheon, an event to raise funds for charity in her mother's name, honoring her love for basketball.
