A new era has dawned for Perth listeners as ABC Radio bids farewell to AM and embraces the future with FM. This transition marks the end of an iconic chapter, not just for the 94-year-old Hamersley transmitter but for the entire city's radio landscape.

Kelly shared his experience, recalling the day he and other trainees were taken to see the transmitter and the towering mast. It was a memorable day, but also a risky one, as they were instructed to climb the mast without electrocuting themselves.
Fast forward to today, and the ABC's AM stations are moving to FM, with ABC Radio Perth, NewsRadio, and Radio National all making the switch on February 23rd. This move is a significant step forward, as it will enhance the listening experience for many, offering clearer sound and wider reach.
But here's where it gets controversial... Perth is leading the way in Australia, becoming the first capital city to move all stations to FM. This move aligns with global trends, as many countries are phasing out AM in favor of FM. James Cridland, a radio futurologist, believes this is a positive step for the ABC, ensuring its emergency broadcasting services are accessible to the majority.
And this is the part most people miss... The transition to FM isn't just about sound quality; it's about reaching a key audience - drivers. With new electric cars lacking AM receivers and hybrid cars following suit, FM becomes the primary choice for in-car entertainment.
Tim Gray, BAI Communications area manager, has been preparing an FM mast in Bickley, Perth Hills, for this very transition. He acknowledges the significance of the Hamersley site but also the need for progress.
NewsRadio, however, will continue to broadcast on AM due to legislative requirements, simulcasting on both bands until the law is amended. Cridland emphasizes the importance of AM in regional areas, but for cities like Perth, FM is the logical choice, offering better coverage and less interference.
